6,000 PRISON OFFICERS TO BE RECRUITED:

Furthermore, Federal Government is to Recruit 6,000 Prisons Officers in 2018 recruitment exercise. The Federal Government through The minister of Interior, Lt-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) said yesterday that government targets to recruit about 6,000 personnel for the Nigerian Prisons Service to close the gap on the current shortage of manpower in the service nationwide.

The minister of Interior, Lt-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) was with the  Governor of Anambra State on a courtesy visit when he made this revelation yesterday. The Minister reiterated that the recruitment initiative is  part of efforts by the federal government to ensure that the Nigerian Prisons Service met the minimum United Nations’ standard for the rehabilitation of prisoners.

The minister lamented that the inability of prisoners to appear in court to defend themselves is a major challenge in the administration of justice. He noted that his Ministry has procured vehicles to convey prisoners to court. Again, he said the federal government is already working out modalities to have courts established near prisons so as to save the cost of transporting those being remanded in prisons to courts to enable them answer to the charges against them.

He further said his ministry has mapped out strategies to permanently address the problem of prison congestion in the country, adding that the Federal Executive Council had already approved the recommendations and had forwarded it to the National Economic Council for further action.
